The Hypothesis of a Continent
The Hypothesis of a Continent is a corpus of pictures that were a part of three different projects over a period of two years. They are similar in that they express a certain idea of contemporary still-life. The idea of Terra Incognita and scientific exploration is at the heart of these projects.It is a constant search consisting in attempting to give depth and scale to landscape-objects made exclusively in studio. How by artificial reproduction might one get closer to nature's perfection? Every photograph begins as an object, ahand-crafted construction before the photographic production. It is important to notice the stages in which the object takes shape and acquires all of its value through the final photograph. The artificial reproduction allows one to express an idea in its exactness. Whether inspired by real things or not, these pictures are hypotheses of a certain reality.Landscapes (their représentations) have always been mere interpretations of real space, and thus situated somewhere between illusion and myth. These images are a personal, finite cosmos. A territory I have delimited. What is important is to create the seeming of an existing physical space. Hence perception can sway between the impression of reality, the illusion and its interpretation.My work aims to blur the boundaries between space and time through photographic medium.
L'Hypothèse d'un Continent
L'Hypothèse d'un Continent est un corpus d'images provenant de trois projets réalisés s'étalant sur une période de deux ans. Il sont similaires par l'expression d'une certaine idée de la nature morte contemporaine.L'idée de terra incognita et le travail scientifique d'exploration sont à la base de ces projets. C'est une recherche perpétuelle consistant à donner une profondeur et une dimension à des objets-paysages réalisés uniquement au studio. Comment, par la reproduction artificielle, peut-on se rapprocher de la perfection de la nature? Chaque image est d'abord un objet, une construction artisanale avant la production photographique, il est important de noter ces étapes ou l'objet prend forme et acquiert ensuite sa valeur par la photographie finale. La reproduction artificielle permet d'exprimer une idée dans son exactitude.Inspirées ou non de choses existantes, les images sont des hypothèses d'une certaine réalité. Le paysage (l'image de) n'a toujours été qu'une une interprétation d'un espace réel. On se situe alors ici entre simulacre et mythe.Ces images sont un cosmos fini, personnel, un territoire dont j'ai délimité les frontières. L'important est de créer le leurre d'un espace physique existant. La perception peut ainsi balancer entre l'impression de réalité, l'illusion et son interprétation.Brouiller les frontières entre temps et espace par le media photographique.
